Prenatal oral health project in West Kalamatan, Indonesia

Dr. Irene Adyatmaka leads this project in Indonesia. She reached out to government clinics in West Kalimantan Province of Indonesia. She gave prenatal oral health training for midwives and dental providers in government clinics, who did not interact much before this training workshop. For many dental and non-dental, the importance of oral health during pregnancy was new information. These providers are now training their peers, delivering oral health care to expecting mothers in rural areas to achieve oral health of mothers and their babies.

What is the key success factor? Dr. Irene said the enthusiasm among midwives and dental providers in improving the health of expecting mothers. The new knowledge gave a sense of urgency in improving oral health, and it worked.

What is the next step? Dr. Irene plans to expand this program to other provinces in Indonesia.

What is the ask? Dr. Irene personally sponsors the prenatal oral health workshop book printing. Printing many copies of this training manual would be critical to building prenatal oral health workforce capacity.
